Feeding Your Rats

As a rat breeder I often have conversations with owners who feel confused and overwhelmed by the information available online explaining how to feed rats. You may have read a lot of information about how mass produced options are poor quality. It is true that many many rat owners do mix their own rat food to ensure their furbabies are receiving the nutrition they need. But often when researching how to do this, people are met with conflicting information and feel tied up in knots about how to balance a diet for their pets. Lawsons Complete is a feeding system that I have developed in order to help solve this problem. It is a way for you to purchase a base mix of grains and choose bags of protein, plant and seed which are already the correct volumes so that you can simply mix your 4 bags together to create 6 litres of complete rat food. You don't have to worry about balancing your diet. You don't have to worry about the expense involved in buying so many items. You don't have to worry about storage for lots of different foods. You don't have to worry about best before dates and using up a lot of feed caused by buying so many individual items to make up a mix! You also have the advantage of spending on only one delivery fee instead of having many items delivered to make your own mix. 

Rats thrive on small amounts of a wide variety of offerings and there are very few food items that are completely unsafe for them to eat. Rats are natural foragers and sporadic feeders. They often try a small amount of something new and if it doesn't make them feel poorly, they will return and eat more. This habit evolved to avoid being poisoned! Rats also know what they need. If they are low in a particular dietary requirement, they will forage for food that will provide that. Thus, I strongly advocate variety! I can often be found sharing my view that 'variety is key'.

Rats also get an incredible amount of nutritional value, mental stimulation and happiness from a regular helping of fresh foods such as cooked chicken, egg, pasta, rice, vegetables and fruits. Owners often share a little of their evening meal with their rats. They can even safely enjoy a rat sized portion of chocolate! Particularly dark chocolate.
